Checklist

Jenna and I have this LA to-do list of places to see, things to eat and events to attend. This past weekend, we can officially check another place off of our list.

Actually, lets start from Friday. It was a calm night where Jenna and I stayed in and finally got around to watching the Blind Side. A very very good movie if I say so myself. If that lady (and family) was truly like that, then that's so amazing. She did so much for him and truly loved her family. A well deserved win for Sandra Bullock!

On Saturday, we got to go to one of the top 5 most popular places in LA: The Griffith Observatory! The place is really big and is way way up on the hill. We got there around 3:30 and the place was packed! We had to park far far away half way down the hill near on the of trails and then had to walk all the way up to the observatory. This weekend was a special 'telescope viewing' session where people brought their own telescopes to share with others.

We tried our best to stay away from the crowds and to really enjoy the great views on such a beautiful day. The sky was clear blue and there wasn't even THAT much smog lingering over the city. ha. From the observatory, we could see the Hollywood sign, the buildings downtown, and I probably could see my work if it wasn't so small!

Here's Jenna taking it all in. I hope she wasn't bored... !

That was a fun Saturday event and we ended the day with pho at a local joint in Alhambra.

On Sunday, we were excited because we returned back to our favorite place on the earth: Disneyland! It was the second to last weekend for the Wine and Food Festival in California Adventures. For some reason, I thought they would transform the WHOLE park into a land of food and wine tents where you could walk from booth to booth trying all kinds of exotic foods and wines... Well... it was sorta like that, but on a much much smaller scale (and much more expensive!). They had a couple booths scattered here and there and most of the places you had to get tickets for. And since the rooms were small, they were only giving out around 65 tickets to each event! Come on?! How fast do you think you can gather 65 people at Disneyland?! geez...

Anyways, the MAIN reason why we went was to see one of our favorite chefs: Mr. Dinner Impossible himself, Robert Irvine!

Before we get to Robert Irvine, just wanted to shout out to Sarah and her ice cream stand! I know they don't have your favorite flavor anymore, but it was still delicious! :)

The other visiting chef was Kerry Simon who was suuuuuuper super lame and boring. His food was really simple and I don't think it was very smart serving raw fish to Disneyland patrons. Or maybe I'm just jealous that Jenna and I didn't get to sit in the eating section and had to watch from beyond the barriers... nope, he sucked.

When Robert Irvine finally came out, the place went into a frenzy! He had so much charisma and energy! He was running all over the place throwing bottles of water to waiting fans and smiling and hugging with everyone! Now that's what I call entertainment!

When he finally got around to the start of his session there was bajillions of people just swarming the cooking tent. Of course we didn't get an eating spot because apparently, people had been waiting for tickets since 8:30am that morning! (hey wait, doesn't the park not open til 9 or 10?!?) It was cool though, we had come early and staked out our spot right at the edge of the barrier.

One thing I really noticed is that Robert Irvine is a total flirt! Strutting around flexing his muscles and smiling and chatting up all the pretty (kinda) ladies in the audience. He forgot one though... Jenna!

As the 'show' went on, it pretty much became him telling hilarious cooking/life stories while his Disney staff and helpers went ahead and cooked. His whole show was about interaction with the audience and making sure they had as much fun as he was having. This only made me love him more! Here he is with a custom Mickey hat that some lady and her mother designed for this festival. I kinda dispise this lady though for things she did prior to Robert Irvine coming out...

My new favorite Food Network personality is Robert Irvine for his kindness, hilarity and overall positive outlook on life. He is definitely the life of the party-type person and it would be amazing to have a conversation with him. A week or two ago, Jenna and I were still debating whether or not it was worth it going to Disneyland just to see him... but now we know we made the right decision!

Anyone else go to the Wine and Food Festival? Actually, the final weekend is next weekend and you can go see Girl (aka Anne Burrell, the GIRL version of Guy Fieri). Jenna and I always call her Girl and it was funny that Robert Irvine also thinks of her as the 'Girl version of Guy but on CRACK!'

Jewish Furlough

This past Wed and Thurs my work was closed due to another "Jewish Holiday". Hey, I wasn't complaining and definitely wanted to take advantage of the free time during the sunny week. On Wed, I met with my new employers and talked with their graphic designer for a while. Later that day, I spent a couple hours ballin' it up at the 24 in Altadena. Oh, also, I'm proud to say that I am no longer afraid of playing with the black guys at the gym. Before, I used to psych myself out before we'd even start playing. I'd think, "shit, these guys are way too athletic for me and will dunk on me all the time!" Most of them had mean game faces on in the gym too! But during these past few months I learned a few things:

1. Yes, the black guys ARE super athletic and most are much better than I am. BUT, there are also a lot who suck and I am also a lot more savvy and basketball IQ smart than most of the players I play against. So I've learned that I all I need to do is play smart and know what my body can do. And hey, a dude dunks on me? So what....

2. Its super refreshing to play with people who are familiar with organized basketball (aka. passing and looking for your team mates)

3. People talk way too much shit in LA. I guess it's all about how you talk the talk and much less about whether or not you can walk the walk... Gets real annoying, real fast!

And after 3 hours of basketball, I chilled at home Wednesday night and watched Hot Tub Time Machine and 500 Days of Summer online! Both were very excellent movies and I highly recommend them to anyone.

Thursday, though, was the day where I had the whole day to plan something fun. I decided I didn't want to stay cooped up indoors and went out to enjoy the midday LA sunshine. I ventured back to Echo Mountain for a quick hike (or so I thought)...

Before I had a job down here, I would try and explore LA and one of the places I visited was Echo Mountain. Now, I don't remember the hike being that hard nor did I remember the sun being that hot. Let's just say that summer may have officially started for me! Check out those sexy backpack tan lines! haha.

Yeah... so I stupidly decided to hike up the 2.5 mile trail without a shirt and sans sunscreen because I was thinking it would be the perfect time for a tan. The while stripes are from the backpack I was wearing that carried my water bottle and D80. Well, I guess 3+ hours in the sun, on the top of a mountain, with no shirt, comes with some dire consequences. Yesterday, I spent every waking hour graciously lathering lotion on any burnt area of my body. It didn't really help that much either. Luckily, when Jenna came over last night, we went out and bought some Aloe Vera which she thankfully helped apply on the hard-to-reach places.

Later Thursday night, I was just expecting to relax at home but Bryan asked if I wanted to play ball with some of his friends from Pharm school. Knowing full well that I couldn't turn down an opportunity to dominate some local chumps ;) I went and played with them. We went to a small rec gym and ended up playing for almost 3 hours. After that, my legs officially hated me... My shoulders, back and chest were sore from the sun burning, my legs were shot from all the on-court running and my arms were dead from hitting all those shots! haha. I passed out sometime before 12am after watching some of Sherlock Holmes in bed.

Here's a pic I found up on Echo Mountain. Pretty creative.

See! This guy was suntanning too and I bet he didn't put any sunscreen on...

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I also went to check out the South Pasadena Farmers Market on Thursday afternoon.

They had a bunch of great looking produce but was kinda expensive. I did want to try some of the cooked items but didn't feel like mingling or spending cash. Next time though... when someone goes with me.

What would you do if you had a couple days off from work? Would you just relax at home or go out and do something?

Proof that food is the foundation of our love... sort of.

100 Miles away, I cooked a very similar dinner to the one Casey cooked and posted yesterday. Must be a sign that we are meant to be :-)

Except instead of spinach with garlic and onions, I cooked spinach and mushrooms... Mushrooms are Casey's not-so-favorite. But I love them!

I also made baked salmon, but I got inspiration from Emeril's salmon recipe from Jon and Kate Plus 8 (*tear* about the death of that show). The salmon is baked with salt and pepper, bell peppers and onions on top, and then I made a sauce with parsley, lemon, white white, garlic, and EVOO.

Dinner for the week! (And spinach side dish for the past couple weeks...) Delicious, but not the most photogenic meal.

I've also been making baked sweet potato fries for a double dose of veggies. Sweet potatoes are considered one of the healthiest veggies! http://www.foodreference.com/html/sweet-pot-nutrition.html

Yay, I get to see Casey tomorrow! :-)

Eat to Live or Live to Eat

That's supposed to be the way things are done but I'm pretty sure my motto is more the latter....

However, I read some health/food article on either Yahoo or Men's Health (or maybe Jenna told me) and they were talking about what important foods men and women should be eating right now to stay healthy for the future. One of those foods was tomatoes because they're rich in lycopene which is supposed to help with prostate health! The article recommended that males eat at least 3-5 servings of tomatoes per week and said, "hey guys, that means go out and eat pizza." Well, I'm not gonna go do that but I will try to incorporate more lycopene into my diet.

Another food was watermelons. Watermelons are apparently a 'secret, underrated' super food and should be eaten frequently, especially by men. I think it also contains lycopene...

So anyways, I decided to take the internet's/Jenna's advice and went out and splurged on groceries this week.

Here's a slice of the giganto watermelon that Jenna picked out last weekend. It is SUPER juicy and amazingly refreshing. A very fitting fruit to welcome the hotter weather down here in LA.

I cut up the whole 16lb watermelon and filled up 3 tupperwear containers to store in the fridge. A side note: How come even when there's a sticker on the watermelon that says, "SEEDLESS", I found 399473 big black seeds in that thing!? False advertisement I tell ya.

YUM.

So the watermelon was officially checked off my list and I was on to tomatoes. Today, I decided to go to Costco to buy just a few bulk items and sadly ended up leaving there with only a few items but a $60 receipt... :( Hopefully the 3lb bag of almonds and the $16 salmon will last me a while! I wanted to get Costco pizza (ya know, for the tomato sauce!) but the line was crazy long... Dam those Alhambra Asians for always flocking to Costco for a cheap lunch!

For dinner, I went with oven baked salmon with a side of sauted spinach. Where is the lycopene you ask? Well, gathering inspiration from Foodnetwork.com, I tossed in diced tomatoes, garlic and lemon juice into a foil pouch to keep the salmon company in the oven. And for the spinach, I combined garlic, onions and more diced tomatoes to the mixture that cooked on the stove. Here's some pics for your viewing pleasure!

Oh, btw, NOTHING smells better than sauted garlic and onions in a little EVOO!!

I added the spinach and waited for it to wilt.

Then the tomatoes and a smidgen of seasonings.

And here's the final product. I don't have a picture of the salmon pouch because it looked kinda gross.

Normally, I'm not a big tomato person (with the exception of Ketchup... I LOVE ketchup) this tomato infested meal was really really tasty! It did help that there was an abundant amount of garlic ;)

So all you guys out there, go eat your lycopene, fish and dark green vegis. You'll be thankful in about.... 30 years. Your prostate will thank you too!

The Karmic Circle

SO once upon a time, long long ago, I had this conversation with an old friend, Kathy Yu, about the ups and downs of life. Every now and then, either when I'm having a rough time or conversely, a great time, I think back to that conversation and smile at our superior intellect! I think our "Karmic" wheel/circle/bar graph idea was pretty correct as I look back through the years and even more true to this very day. I won't go into detail about the concept because it's just to scientific for many of you... It'll blow your mind! haha jk, I just don't feel like writing it...

Lately, as some of you may know, I've been going through a pretty rough patch in life with the passing of my Grandma, the constant troubles with my car, my knee/bodily health, and of course my crappy job. It was definitely clear that I was at the bottom of the circle or on the low bar in the Karma bar graph. But hey, I feel as though I'm a pretty optimistic person with a generally sunny outlook on life and thought, "hey, don't sweat it, things will swing around for the good and everything will work out."

Well... for the frickin' LONGEST time, I had been patiently waiting for that day to come and I was getting pretty fed up with waiting. This Thursday-Sunday, the tides turned and my luck just swung to the top of the circle and to the highest bars on the graph!

THURSDAY: It was the second Thursday of the month and that means it was Art Walk day in downtown LA. I was super stoked to go, mostly because all my coworkers wanted to come with. When it got down to the end of the day, they ALL backed out and it was up to me on whether or not I was still going. Normally, I'd want to avoid the hassle of parking downtown and venturing out all by myself, but this time I decided I really wanted to be independent and go just for me!

I walked around for almost 3 hours by myself, collecting free food and drinks along the way. I only looked at the stuff that I found interesting and never stayed in a place where I didn't feel comfortable. I even managed to get over the awkwardness of taking pictures and shot away. Up above is probably my favorite piece of the night. Its probably just some homeless woman walking the street, but the background is horizontally blurred into streaks of vibrant colors. The way the picture was lit and hung on the wall just forced viewers to gravitate towards the piece. In my haste to photograph it and move on, I didn't even catch the name of the piece or the artist!

An equally favorite piece of the night came as I was tirelessly heading back to my car, ready to leave for the night. I saw this guy taking a picture of these girls through the window and decided to check it out. This Asian painter was doing two intricate pieces on the backs of two other Asian girls. Just the style and technique of the whole thing was very fascinating and really caught my eye. I stayed for a while, watching them interact and joke around as she slowly painted one girl and then the next. I wonder how long they were sitting there for??

So the Art Walk was a huge success and I was very proud of myself for venturing out and not letting the fear of being a loner deny me the chance to experience one of the best monthly events in LA. I really do wish that I could bring Jenna or my brother one time because they would absolutely love it!

With spirits already soaring high, Friday rolled in and I was ecstatic for the weekend. Mostly because it would be the first time seeing Jenna in over 3 weeks! Oh, i forgot to mention, another reason why I was happy was because I got a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I already, had a 'job', but this new one is a real one! Its a large and prestigious company with lots of success in their past and future. The best part is that I get to do graphic design for a candy company! Let me repeat: CANDY! I love candy! Almost as much as I love cereal and cookies. Doing my job now will make me so happy and I should flow with ideas and excitement. This will be my new home in 2 weeks!

On Friday, I broke the news to my current boss and all of my coworkers. At first, I was nervous that my boss would be upset but in the end he was actually very supportive and understanding. I do want to thank him and the company for taking a chance on me and letting me be a part of their company. There were many times I had to miss work for personal reasons and they were ever so understanding. I appreciated that more than they know.

The end of the day quickly came and I called Jenna to see how her drive from Santa Barbara was going. Of course, she was stuck in traffic but had a surprise "crazy" question to ask me.

"Hey, do you want to go to Disneyland tonight to celebrate your new job?"

"!!! WHAT??!?! Yeah I do!"

haha, so we did!

We only spent a little over 2 hours at the park but dang, it was well worth it! We didn't have to pay for parking because we parked at Downtown Disney (shhh..dont tell), we made it just in time for fireworks, we walked right into an outstanding showing of Captain EO (which I now dub myself as Captain C.O.) AND we even managed to fit in Pirates and Smallworld. Great relaxing time if you ask me! And of course it was all made better because Jenna was there celebrating with me!

Saturday came and we decided to go to the UCLA/Westwood area because Jenna wanted to buy a 'UCLA Mom' mug for a ...coworker? Anyways, we ended up getting sushi at Tomodachi's in Westwood!

This was Jenna's Dragon Roll which was a heavenly combination of baked crab and lobster on top of a california roll. (i think)

I was starving and opted for the larger 2 item lunch special. Spicy Tuna and Spicy Chicken. I'm hot like that!

After lunch, there is only one place where you can go in Westwood for a great cheap dessert: Diddy Riese!

Because I AM the cookie monster, I got myself a M&M cookie/Snickerdoodle/Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwich while Jenna purchased a dozen and a half of cookies to bring back for her office. Surprisingly, she also got a scoop of Rocky Road ice cream, which I now know is her favorite!

It was barely the beginning of the afternoon and I had already had sushi AND cookies!? My Karmic circle was way on the top now!

We then headed over to the campus to buy her mug and stroll around the beautiful campus. When we got there, we were surprised to see a bunch of people, both kids and parents alike, and wondered what the heck was going on!? Apparently, we had come on the right day, because Saturday was "Alumni Day" and Jenna was most definitely a UCLA Alum! Cool! We (or I) stocked up on free Alumni coffee and fruit, while Jenna found some comment cards to fill out letting others know how great the experience at UCLA can be.

Here's the Alumni registration tent and the cool big letters they set up.

These were the comment cards that we filled out and posted for everyone else to admire and take to heart. Guess which one was Jenna's and which was mine!

I swear, it's like they knew she was coming to visit this weekend and lured her back to the campus.

After our tour, we headed back home to cook some dinner. (BTW, the iphone map is a MUST for LA because without it, we would have been stuck in the downtown traffic for the Bieber/Urrrsher concert that was about to start.) We decided to grill steaks and bake sweet potato fries (Jenna's specialty) It had been a long time since I'd had steak and boy was it tasty. Even though I'm broke and could only afford the bulk cheap cuts, the marinade that we made saved the day and I think it turned out alright!

We did a lime based marinade. 2 limes were juiced over the cuts of meat.

Then we added garlic, cilantro, hot sauce, olive oil, honey and salt & pepper later.

As I grilled the steaks, Jenna prepared the sweet potato fries. If you haven't made them, I HIGHLY recommend it. They're simple to make and require very little cooking knowledge.

Be sure to season well.

I think the steak was done... and I made sure to rest it for at least 10 minutes. (or else Anthony Bourdain would kill me!!)

After quickly sauteing some kale with garlic, onions and corn, our meal was complete! A delicious ending to the day.

After dinner, to burn of some calories, we decided to do a little yoga and impromptu ballroom dancing. One day we will memorize the Melissa Waltz from Dancing with the Stars and perform it for you. I have some grace in this large body!

ON TOP of all that awesomeness that had happened in the past three days, I forgot to mention that I FINALLY got my car back from the repair shop! If you don't know, I got into a chicken fight with a Ram (I swear!) on I-5 and ended up losing badly. My car had been in the shop since 4/20 (hehe) and I just finally got it back Saturday morning (5/15). I drove for almost a month in that 2 lb Nissan Versa aka The Anti-Cool. When I brought the car back to Hertz the guy was surprised that I had put over 2300 miles on the car! HAHA. That's what trips to SB, SD and Danville will do to a rental car. What a crazy month.....

But hey, everything was turning around and my Karmic meter was finally swinging towards greatness. I feel as though all the stresses and bad times down here in LA were solely so I could feel even better right now. I am loving my relationship with Jenna (even though we do not see each other enough), I have the Batmobile back (which I am renaming The Problem Child), my body is in stable condition (so long as I wear the brace) and I finally have a job that I can be proud of! I hope this high feeling lasts for a while and it would be nice to finally start loving life down here in LA. Here's to the future and believing that even when times are rough, things will get better eventually. All you have to do is wait and be patient!

Up next: 2 bball tournaments, Jenna's Birthday and a family trip to Toronto!

Ice Cream Truck REMIX

Today for lunch, my coworker and I decided to check out the local food truck stop right next to our work. As usual, I brought my lunch and therefor wasn't planning on getting anything from the trucks. We turned the corner and surprisingly saw 2 food trucks instead of the normal loner one. The first, I instantly recognized as the Grilled Cheese Truck because of the bright yellow and orange pictures graffitied all over the vehicle. The other vehicle though, was a mystery to me.

As we got closer, I noticed that the GC truck had no customers while the other truck, named the King Kone, had a line of at least 12 people. What was this popular new food? Burgers? Tacos? HotDogs?

NOPE, it was an Ice Cream truck! But not the familiar one from your childhood with the annoying music and the scary old pictures of foreign popsicles that you've never ever seen in your life. This was a new kind of ice cream truck. PS, anyone remember those ninja turtle popsicles that had gum balls for eyeballs? Or was that a clown shaped one? I don't remember....

The King Kone truck is by no means the most beautifully designed truck; the pictures are pretty kiddy and the overall color is very ....bland. But lets not judge a book by its cover here and instead, judge this truck by the line that had formed! haha. I never buy stuff at work but decided I really wanted ice cream today. It wasn't super special or something different that I'd never tasted before, but hey, ice cream is ice cream. Plus, every night at my apartment, at exactly 7:34pm, I hear the annoying-but-tempting sound of the neighborhood ice cream truck as it slowly drives down my street and it always makes me want ice cream.

My coworker, however, decided to go for the more normal lunch-time food item and ordered a grilled cheese sandwich from the GCT. He got the 'famous' BBQ pulled pork and mac-n-cheese sandwich. From the looks of it... and the SMELL... it seemed very delicious.

Anyone ever tried either of these trucks?

While we were waiting for my ice cream cone, this lady saw that my coworker got a sandwich from the GCT and declared that their sandwiches were, "lifechanging".... I dunno about that.... On the other hand, my ice cream was very satisfying and reminded me very much of Yogurt Park from back in the bay (except it was ice cream instead of yogurt).

Dear Ice Cream/Dessert Trucks: If you come, I will most likely buy.

Running on Empty

It's been a long time since I designed anything new solely for my own pleasure. I get home at 7ish and am burnt from spending 8 hours in front of a computer designing for work. But I feel as though I should do more and push my craft and my own boundaries. With that said, I find myself stuck in a rut. I have no ideas and nothing to inspire me as of right now.

I NEED IDEAS!

Someone have something they want me to design? A tattoo design? A shirt? Shoes? Help me out here!

Thanks.

Also, speaking of running on empty... do you know how hard it is to try and return a rental car on empty when you live in LA and drive to work everyday!? I'm on empty right now but need the car for at least another 3 days... how many gallons do I get??

Update

A little update to this outdated blog...

Just got back to LA from a ballz out weekend in San Diego. Played with my brother and his friends in a UCSD basketball tournament where we won 3rd place. Should have won 1st place... but ran into a couple white guys who dominated us! However, Jeff's girlfriend's team kicked ass the ENTIRE weekend and brought the championship shirts back to SDSU. Those girls are freaky good and I watched in awe as they clobbered some team by 50 pts in a 70-20 win... Dam. And yes, when the girls got their championship shirts, all us guys were extremely jealous. At least I knew I was. I wanted to walk into the office today sporting my new winners shirt.

Here is a pano of the gym we spent so many hours at. Did I mention that UCSD has a beautiful campus and those kid should be lucky to be going to such a nice school!

Unfortunately, being in SD for the weekend meant that I was not home for mother's day. Hopefully all the mothers out there had a great day and were pampered by sons and husbands alike. Lets just say that Jeff's and my present to my mom was a Sunday dominating win against a pretty decent bball team.

Upon returning to LA last night, I was super tired but had a couple things I wanted to take care of. I decided to casually watch the Suns/Spurs game before I went out to buy groceries for the week or do my laundry. I also wanted to finish the logo designs I was working on down in SD for work... Alas, I fell asleep at 8 and decided I would go after a 1 hour nap. 11.5 hours later, I woke up and it was already Monday and time to go to work. haha. Good nap.

This is what I saw right outside of my apartment as I was coming home from work today. Peacocks causing a commotion as they slowly crossed the road! Craziness. Who would ever think you'd see 3 peacocks hanging out in Alhambra?! They'd better run fast cuz you know how asians'll eat anything!

Here's another pic of the phenomenon.

SO that's pretty much it these days. Actually, I haven't seen Jenna in almost 3 weeks and that is definitely not a good thing. She needs a much deserved break and I need a hug. This weekend we will finally get to hang out and I'd better take advantage of the time. Any ideas for something fun but not too crazy in LA?

Hatsue Ouye

2 Sundays ago, April 25th, my Grandma passed away. She was 87 years old and was my last remaining Grandparent. Although I am very sad to see her go, I know she had been suffering for many years and is in a much better place now. The tragic loss of my Grandpa in 2003 really hurt my Grandma and I think she never really recovered from that. Now, she can finally be reunited with him where ever they are.

Thanks to all who came out to the funeral service this past Sunday and for only showing compassion, love and respect for my Grandma.

I will miss our long Hand and Foot card games, numerous fishing trips and outstanding cooking that no one can replicate!

I love you and miss you Grandma. Thank you for all the years of pure joy and teaching me to be strong and always love your family and friends.

Homemade Chicken Vegetable Soup

This has been my lunch everyday for at least the past 5 months... I make it in bulk about once a month and freeze the rest, so I can easily have a healthy lunch everyday!

Step 1: Poach the chicken. Place the chicken in a big pot of water with onions, celery, carrots, rosemary, and a bay leaf. Simmer for 1 hour.

It should look like this when it's done... Remove the chicken and strain the broth with cheesecloth. The broth is the base for the soup!

Step 2: Chop up lots and lots of veggies! I like onion, carrot, zucchini, squash, celery, brussels sprouts, and broccoli.

Step 3: Cook vegetables in a big pot with a little bit of EVOO.

Step 4: When vegetables are tender, add crushed tomatoes and more broth. Then I add two bags of Trader Joe's Southern Greens (collared greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, and spinach!)

Step 5: Add cooked barley.

Step 6: Add whole wheat pasta and cook until al dente. Shred poached chicken and add.

This feeds me for weeks! This post is dedicated to grandmas, because making large quantities of soup and freezing some for later reminds me of my grandma. Just like tonkatsu reminds Casey of his late grandma :-)
